Protection of Individuals from Harm and Abuse

Description

This is an HN unit in social care and will give you the opportunity to develop an understanding of the legislation that is in place to protect children and vulnerable adults as well as understanding the issues in relation to harm and abuse. This unit will equip you with methods of working that promote good practice in the protection of individuals. Although you will look at protection of all individuals, your discussion, case study and written work will focus on your own client group

This unit can also be used as a preparation for undertaking an HNC in Social Care. It is also highly appropriate for people who completed have completed an HNC in Early Education , or an HNC in Social Care some time ago, and feel that they would benefit from further study in this area . Successful completion could give credit for this unit in the HNC Social Care Course.

On completion of the Unit the candidate should be able to:
• Examine issue relating to the protection of individuals from abuse including :
Definitions and types of abuse
Indicators, signs and symptoms
Vulnerability to and causes of, abuse
An appreciation of cultural differences
• Work in accordance with the SSSC’s code of Practice, policies and procedures
• Describe the legislative and policy frameworks designed to protect individuals from abuse
• Understand the care workers role in relation to protection of individuals, including working collaboratively with staff in the same agency and with other agencies and professionals.

You will be assessed through an extended written case study where you will need to show that you understand the situation of a particular individual and how to respond with a plan of care.

Entry requirements: You should have good written communication skills and be able to complete work of an HNC level. This could be demonstrated through nationally recognised qualifications such as Highers or Standard grades at Credit level or through an employer’s reference.

Pre-requisites

Evidence of academic ability eg. Highers, HNC, NC , Diploma in Social Work, nursing etc.
